Island representation at COP27

During COP27 we created a virtual “Island Space” where we shared key insights and developments related to remote, rural and island communities.

Island Innovation wants to ensure that your communities are represented and that relevant information is made available to you.

Given that 20% of UN member states are part of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), we expect there to be a number of conversations relating to islands.

What is COP27?

A defining moment in the fight against climate change.

Science has established beyond doubt that the window for action is closing rapidly. In November 2022, Egypt will host the 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, with a view to building on previous successes and paving the way for future ambition.

A golden opportunity for all stakeholders to rise to the occasion and tackle effectively the global challenge of climate change facilitated by Egypt on the African continent.

It is the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference.

Goals and Vision for COP27

Inclusive, rules based and ambitious, substantive outcomes, commensurate with the challenge based on science and guided by principles building on agreements, decisions, pledges and commitments, from RIO 1992 to Glasgow 2021. We seek to accelerate global climate action through emissions reduction, scaled-up adaptation efforts and enhanced flows of appropriate finance. We recognize that ‘just transition’ remains a priority for developing countries worldwide.

MITIGATION

Secure global net zero and keep 1.5 degrees within reach.

ADAPTATION

Urgently adapt to protect communities and natural habitats.

FINANCE

Green transformation of financial systems.

COLLABORATION

Work together to deliver.

“I deeply believe that COP27 is an opportunity to showcase unity against an existential threat that we can only overcome through concerted action and effective implementation. As incoming Presidency Egypt will spare no effort to ensure that COP27 becomes the moment when the world moved from negotiation to implementation and where words were translated to actions, and where we collectively embarked on a path towards sustainability, a just transition and eventually a greener future for coming generations.” –

COP27 President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi
