Island Finance Forum 2022
About The Track
Island economies are frequently exposed to adverse natural events such as cyclones, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis. The resulting disasters can affect islands’ economic, human, and physical environment and also harm their long-term development.
Insurance and risk financing provides a critical safety net, protecting assets, lives, and livelihoods from the impact of crises and increasing a government’s financial resilience against natural disasters.
Over the last 60 years, extreme natural events in the Pacific region have impacted more than 9.2 million people and caused damage over US$3.2 billion, with tropical cyclones being the major cause of this loss and damage (World Bank 2012).
This track encourages peer exchange of regional knowledge, dialogue on past experiences, lessons learned, optimal use of financial tools, and replicable solutions.

Fintech as a definition started trending in recent years as the future of financial services, and of money itself. For those already in the know, this is not news.
Fintech isn’t a business sector; it’s dozens of sectors. Everything from high street banks, investment companies, money transfer, FX, fintech is re-engineering these sectors into their next generation.
And there are new kinds of businesses emerging: crowdfunding, peer2peer platforms, crypto currencies, AI and robo-advice... sectors that are digitally native, they didn’t exist before the internet.
Fintech is about new companies, and new technologies for old companies. It’s about inventors and visionaries, and everyday people creating something new. It’s about your bank, your phone, and your job. And it’s about the future.
Future, before it happens.
