The 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) taking place in Baku (Azerbaijan) officially starts on Monday. Throughout the 2 weeks of the global conference, the Island Innovation team will be reporting from the ground, hosting in-person and virtual side events in partnership with impactful organisations. Island Voices @ COP29 will be a space to share key insights and developments related to island communities.

On Tuesday, the Caribbean Climate Justice Leaders discussed their expectations for COP29, shared their experiences in the Academy, and presented the key projects they are leading to address climate challenges in Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Through their unique perspectives, they explored how the Caribbean can strengthen its position in global climate negotiations, advocate for justice, and build resilience to the impacts of climate change.

Papua New Guinea will not attend the 29th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties (UNFCCC COP29) this year. Foreign Affairs Minister Justin Tkatchenko recently announced it at the Commonwealth Ministerial Meeting on Small State (CMMSS) in Apia, Samoa.

In what was described by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, as a ‘game-changing” development, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was recently signed between the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, through the Ministry of Education, and the Open University of Tanzania. The contract heralds the opening of new doors of opportunities for teachers in the Federation through the provision of scholarships towards Bachelor’s as well as Master’s degrees in Education.
