Caribbean startups are turning excess seaweed into an agroecology solution
In 2015, smelly mats of a brown macroalgae called sargassum piled as high as 1.2 meter on the beaches of Barbados, recalls Joshua Forte.
It was the fourth year in what has become an annual nightmare, with an estimated 20 tons of seaweed inundating Caribbean shorelines each year and wrecking the region’s tourism-centred economies. The onslaught of seaweed reeked of rotten eggs, but Forte smelled something else: opportunity.
Stop calling Uist remote, pleads island council as they look to attract new families
Community leaders on a Scots island are pleading for people to stop using the word ‘remote’ as it is putting people off moving there.
The local council on Uist has also suggested people refrain from using pictures empty landscapes to show off the islands in case it puts off potential incomers.
Uist is the collective name for the six islands in the archipelago in the Outer Hebrides – Berneray, North Uist, Grimsay, Benbecula, South Uist and Eriskay.
France urged to repay billions of dollars to Haiti for independence ‘ransom’
France should repay billions of dollars to Haiti to cover a debt formerly enslaved people were forced to pay in return for recognising the island’s independence, according to a coalition of civil society groups that is launching a new push for reparations.
The Caribbean island state became the first in the region to win its independence in 1804 after a revolt by enslaved people.
As we get closer to the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), significant progress has been made in shaping the conference program, featuring a comprehensive schedule of high-level events and side activities. On-site, off-site, and virtual satellite events will occur parallel to the main conference.
Most of these events will be led by member states, UN entities, and accredited organisations, like Island Innovation, in support of the SIDS4 agenda, offering a chance to share best practices and foster new collaborations that can propel a sustainable future for SIDS.
We will soon disclose more information about our 6 side events in Antigua and Barbuda, but you can already register to receive the daily bulletins and latest updates about SIDS4.
