About Maria J. Aguiar

I started working with Island Innovation as their Social Media Analyst in November 2022. I’m responsible for curating content for our main media channels and nurturing our media platform-specific audience. Besides doing what I love, I get to bring awareness to fragile island communities that need our attention, just like my own.

I’m from São Miguel, located in the beautiful archipelago of the Azores, and moved to Porto for my Nutritional Sciences degree. As a Dietitian, I was very fortunate to start my career as a medical researcher and then developing content for corporate communications about food sustainability. That also jump-started me across a journey of all matters related to the efforts being made to secure a resourceful future for people and the planet.

When I was younger, I didn’t value the natural beauty of the island that surrounded me. Nowadays, I get excited just to go back and appreciate the fact that it’s still particularly untouched by the human hand. Island Innovation divinely handed me a front row seat to address the lack of support and visibility in vulnerable regions.

Island Innovation’s reputation speaks for itself. Besides helping to drive sustainable development across islands worldwide, this Organization is committed to all communities, especially its own. I feel like I can truly make a difference and influence people when I’m around this team, they’re superheroes. I came across Island Innovation on a job search and the funny thing is I didn’t get the first role I applied to a few months back! And you can imagine my surprise when they promptly got back to me with my dream job offer. They believed in my skills and gave me the opportunity to explore my creativity while being closer to my cultural heritage and I’m going to make the most out of it!

Secret skill: I’m great with memorizing and I quickly pick up accents by hearing!
