St. Maarten is at a crossroads. Unchecked urban development and climate change have had detrimental effects on the island’s natural and built heritage. Recent community-led movements and initiatives have led to an increased demand for the local Government to rethink its policies and legislation in order to better protect and preserve the island’s monuments and heritage. Social media is also playing a critical role in highlighting heritage issues and the sharing of knowledge and support.
