Powerful COP29 statement by Former President of the Republic of Seychelles –

“Alongside climate finance, COP29 was expected to serve as an important platform for nations to demonstrate their intention to submit stronger national climate commitments, strengthen adaptation efforts, and show tangible progress and action on previous pledges.

Halfway through the conference some key experts and leaders including UN Former Secretary General and former Climate Chief, issued an open letter to the UN. — Stating that, ‘The United Nations’ COP climate talks are

‘no longer fit for purpose’ and need an urgent overhaul.'”

Voices of resilience and Offshore Renewables

The Island innovation team and the Caribbean Climate Justice Leaders participated in 2 side events yesterday.

The first event took place in the Climate Mobility Pavilion, in partnership with the Global Centre for Climate Mobility. It opened with a trailer screening of Born, Bred, Ga Dead, a film showcasing the struggles of Bahamians facing climate displacement.

 

The screening was followed by a panel discussion featuring youth advocates from the Caribbean Climate Justice Leaders Academy (CCJLA), the Global Center for Climate Mobility (GCCM) and Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) on how climate mobility intersects with community resilience. Speakers included Noelle Young (CCJLA), Jeshua Bardoo (CCJLA), Jervon Sands (Director/Producer of Born, Bred, Ga Dead), Gabriela Nagle Alverio (Duke University), Benedict Arthur (CMP Youth Delegate, Ghana), and moderator Arianna Abdul-Nour (Island Innovation).

In the afternoon, Island Innovation CEO James Ellsmoor was a speaker in the panel discussion on Efficient water management and Offshore Renewables – A Green Opportunity for Island Blue Economies, organised by IRENA SIDS Lighthouses Initiative & Government of Malta. The session explored sustainable solutions like solar, wind, and tidal power tailored to SIDS, with insights from the International Renewable Energy Agency’s SIDS Lighthouses Initiative.

The Island Innovation team also met with:

  • Kedell Worboys, the Saint Helena Government UK Representative
  • Julieta Cristina Schallenberg, Vice-Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy Government of the Canary Islands and
  • Max Puig, the Executive Vice President of the National Council for Climate Change, Dominican Republic.
