Week 2 at COP29: What we are looking forward to today

In-person Events

Voices of Resilience: Navigating Climate Mobility

18 November, 11:30 AM-12:30 PM (Baku)

Location: Climate Mobility Pavilion (Blue Zone)

Org: Global Centre for Climate Mobility, Island Innovation

This side event will bring together a powerful combination of film, personal testimonies, and expert panel discussions to address climate-induced migration and mobility challenges in the Caribbean and other vulnerable regions.

The session will open with a trailer screening of Born, Bred, Ga Dead, a film showcasing the struggles of Bahamians facing climate displacement. This will be followed by a panel discussion featuring youth advocates from the Caribbean Climate Justice Leaders Academy (CCJLA), the Global Center for Climate Mobility (GCCM) and Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) on how climate mobility intersects with community resilience.

Through personal stories and shared experiences, the event aims to spotlight the urgent need for global action on climate mobility, namely to inspire policy change, raise awareness, or mobilise resources, particularly for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Efficient water management and Offshore Renewables – A Green Opportunity for Island Blue Economies

18 November, 3:00-4:15 PM (Baku)

Location: IRENA Pavilion COP29 (Blue Zone)

Org: IRENA SIDS Lighthouses Initiative & Government of Malta

This session will explore sustainable solutions like solar, wind, and tidal power tailored to SIDS, with insights from the International Renewable Energy Agency’s SIDS Lighthouses Initiative. Malta, while no longer classified as a SIDS, shares similar geographical and climate challenges.

The session will highlight Malta’s experience in addressing climate impacts, such as rising temperatures and water scarcity, through innovative strategies like desalination, reclaimed wastewater, and investments in renewable energy.

Malta’s National Investment Plan and Offshore Renewable Energy Policy will serve as examples of how small nations can enhance energy security and sustainability, offering valuable lessons for SIDS.

November 18: Human Development, Children and Youth, Health and Education

In today’s COP29 Presidency agenda, the first-ever Human Development Day will prioritise a holistic approach to climate change. This event will recognise the crucial interconnections between human development, youth, health, and education.

By addressing these issues as both standalone priorities and interrelated components, the global conference aims to foster a healthier, better-educated, and adequately skilled population, particularly among youth. Key moments will include a series of high-level meetings and events focused on investing in human development, health, and jobs. The Presidency will also launch the Baku Initiative on Human Development for Climate Resilience.
