At the Island Stage

With Hon. Edward David Burt, Premier, Government of Bermuda

With Hon. Carlos James, Minister of Tourism, Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Throughout this week, the Island Stage has provided a platform for influential island stakeholders, amplifying their voices and contributions. From the President of the Republic of Palau to the Premier of Bermuda, their speeches have resonated, shedding light on innovative island-led initiatives driving sustainability and resilience. These endeavours are designed not only for local communities but for the global good.

Hon. Carlos James, Minister of Tourism, Sustainable Development, and Culture of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, aptly highlighted that not enough action has been taken following the decisions made in the negotiation rooms at previous COPs, and that to tackle the world’s greatest threat, which is climate change, we must put a lot more resources in place.

While our speakers offer diverse narratives and perspectives, a unanimous sentiment emerges regarding this year’s COP resolutions: the imperative to translate commitments into actionable solutions. Time is of the essence, and there’s an urgent call to transform intentions into tangible actions.

At the IRENA Pavilion

As we absorbed the insightful presentations at the Island of Hope Stage, our CEO, James Ellsmoor, was a featured speaker at the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) event within the Blue Zone of COP28. Engaging alongside a distinguished panel, including Heads of State and Government and Ministers responsible for Energy, Environment, and Climate Change from Small Island Developing States (SIDS), James delved into the critical perspective that the survival and resilience of SIDS depend significantly on robust international support.

The high-level IRENA event served as a platform to showcase the notable achievements, progress, and impacts resulting from the energy transition efforts of SIDS. It also provided a forum for gathering SIDS’ perspectives on the operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund.
