About the Program

With funding provided by Our Shared Ocean, an initiative from the Government of Ireland to build research partnerships with SIDS, Island Innovation has designed a comprehensive 6-week online course in Sustainable Development, running through April and May.

The course material, delivered by relevant international practitioners, offers a structured and immersive learning experience that will educate and engage students from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and provides key practical skills and the principles of sustainable development.

This program’s grand finale takes place at the prestigious Global Sustainable Islands Summit (GSIS) in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Co-hosted by the Government of Prince Edward Island, GSIS brings together a diverse network of professionals, researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders.

This is a comprehensive 6-week online course designed to equip students from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) with the knowledge and skills needed to drive positive change in their communities. It equips them with an understanding of sustainable development principles and practical skills in areas like sustainable business and cross-sectoral collaboration.
The program is funded by Our Shared Ocean, an initiative from the Government of Ireland, committed to supporting research partnerships with SIDS.
Island Innovation, a trusted organization dedicated to empowering island communities, has designed and delivers the program curriculum.
The program is entirely online, making it accessible to students from all across the SIDS region.
The program is open to post-graduate (MSc/PhD) SIDS national students currently enrolled in an eligible SIDS institution. Students from various disciplines, including environmental sciences, marine biology, and finance, are encouraged to apply.
In cases where there is limited uptake from eligible institutions within SIDS, consideration may be extended to SIDS nationals studying abroad.
To apply, you will need to submit an application form outlining how the course will contribute to your studies/research and how you plan to utilize the acquired skills. You can find the full eligibility criteria and application instructions on the program website.
Participants will gain a deep understanding of sustainable development, develop practical skills to drive positive change, and learn from renowned international practitioners. They will also have the opportunity to attend the prestigious Global Sustainable Islands Summit (GSIS) in Canada.
The program culminates at the GSIS, offering participants a unique opportunity to network with leading professionals, present their work, and contribute to the global discussion on sustainable solutions.
Participants are eligible to apply for Our Shared Ocean Mobility & Travel Grants (up to €2,000) to facilitate their attendance at the GSIS. Additionally, the top 10 applicants will have their registration included and a facilitated meeting with relevant teams.

Students must be citizens of one of the 39 SIDS countries or reside within one of the 18 Regional Commissions according to the official UN list (see below):
