From the Pinnacle Gazette – Take Leyla Hasanova, the COP29 Youth Climate Champion from Azerbaijan, and Tyrell Gittens, CCJLA youth advocate, environmentalist and journalist from Trinidad and Tobago. They have paired their strengths, each carrying their unique perspectives to the conference.

Leyla Hasanova aims to bridge the gap between youth-led organisations and the climate negotiation process, asserting the necessity of ensuring their voices are not only heard but incorporated. “We are the generation facing the dire consequences of climate change, and it is our rights, and our future,” she stated.

Yesterday, the Island Innovation team started the day with a session on energy transition in the Caribbean in the CARICOM Pavilion. Moderated by CEO James Ellsmoor, this side event aimed to empower regional discussions and showcase the leadership of Caribbean islands in the energy transition. The expert speakers explored the economic impacts of fossil fuel reliance, the potential of renewable energy sources—including solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass—and the unique opportunities and barriers that lie ahead for the region.

The afternoon was marked by the Guardians of the Earth: Indigenous Youth Leadership in Biodiversity and Climate Action session at the Extreme Hangout Pavilion. The event, moderated by Vincent Diringer (Island Innovation’s PR & Editorial Lead), spotlighted young Indigenous leaders currently pioneering efforts to protect biodiversity in their communities.

Whitney Leah Melinard (CCJLA, Youth advocate from Dominica), Nigel Maduro (CCJLA, Intersectional environmental activist from Aruba) and Priyanka Pandey (CMP Youth Delegate from Nepal) shared their experiences of community-driven conservation, focusing on the intersection of cultural heritage and biodiversity protection. The session aimed to foster a dialogue on how international policy can better incorporate Indigenous-led solutions to protect nature and biodiversity, and how youth leadership is shaping the future of environmental stewardship.
