“There’s Just No More Land” - Community-led Planned Relocation as Last-resort Adaptation to Sea Level Rise in Solomon Islands
Walande is a community of 800 people in the Pacific Island nation of Solomon Islands. From the shore of their current village site, a few wooden posts poking out from the waves are visible at low tide–the only remnants of a tiny artificial island off the coast of South Malaita, in the Solomons, that was once their thriving small island home.
What lies beneath: Chuuk Lagoon needs more oil clearance
Experts in Chuuk are warning that the state — and a vast swathe of the central Pacific — are at growing risk of an environmental catastrophe should the oil tanks rupture in one or more of the Japanese transport vessels that still litter the floor of the lagoon.
How changing winter ice conditions around Prince Edward Island (Canada) are letting the sea eat into its shores
The amount and duration of shore ice around Prince Edward Island has been changing in recent years, and researchers say shorter seasons are a concern because the ice provides a protective shield against winter storms and erosion. The last two winters saw lighter ice conditions than historic normal levels.

Through their open letter, OceanCare is urging governments at the third UN Ocean Conference taking place this June (UNOC3) to support a ban on fossil fuel exploration in the ocean:
UNOC3 will take place from 9th to 13th June 2025 in Nice, France. The conference provides a unique opportunity for governments to agree on a global strategy to protect and restore the Ocean. It is vital that such a strategy addresses the key gaps in the current failure of world governments to meet the targets of SDG 14 (“Life below water”). It must also be consistent with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

However, the zero draft which is currently in governmental circulation, lacks any ambition and merely echoes past achievements. The negotiations are happening now and OceanCare wants UNOC3 to call for a ban on offshore oil and gas exploration. For this, we need your support.
