About Philippe Sands QC
Philippe Sands QC is a Professor of Law at University College London and a practising barrister at Matrix Chambers. He appears as counsel before various international courts and tribunals, and sits as an international arbitrator.
He is also an internationally renowned author and expert on the origins of international crimes. His book, East West Street: On the Origins of Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide, won multiple awards.
He is the current President of English PEN which supports writers at risk and campaigns for diversity and freedom of expression, and he contributes to major publications such as the New York Review of Books, Vanity Fair, the Financial Times and The Guardian.
He has been a strong and eloquent voice on the global stage in support of the recognition of ecocide, and was Co-Chair of the Independent Expert Panel which drafted a consensus legal definition of ecocide as a potential international crime.
