Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation is a native Gullah/Geechee from the Sea Islands. This chain of islands is in the Atlantic Ocean from Jacksonville, NC to Jacksonville, FL. They have been the barrier islands that protect the United States from hurricanes and these islands are now the frontline of climate change impacts including sea level rise. Queen Quet is a global leader fighting to insure that resilience, adaptation, and climate change planning incorporates cultural heritage. She wants to insure that the economic prosperity of island communities is received by those that are native to these spaces instead of having those communities retreat as ‘climate refugees’ while others come in with large sums to rebuild in those spaces and then ‘sell” cultural tourism as part of the tourism industry. She fights daily to link with other islanders of the world that seek to heal their environments and protect their cultural legacies which is the true prosperity of each island community.
