Island of Jeju (South Korea) raises stink over fetid algae invasion
Stinky ginger-colored algae have appeared on the shorelines of Jeju Island, turning emerald-blue waters a dark orange. The arrival of the algae, named sargassum horneri, harms the natural scenery and distresses local commercial fishers.
Guernsey’s transport plan to cope with 1,000 homes
The States of Guernsey has published a new transport plan for the north of the Island. The Better Transport Plan aims to improve transport choice in and around St Sampson, in preparation for a number of new housing developments in the area. The plan proposes a new network of linked walking and cycling routes to make travelling on foot and by bike safer and easier.

A highlight of the Global Sustainable Islands Summit 2024 was sponsoring students who completed our “Best-Practice Skills for Sustainable Development in the SIDS” training course (developed in collaboration with Our Shared Ocean, Government of Ireland). These students, some from remote island communities, traveled with us to Prince Edward Island (Canada) to attend a workshop session at the Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation. They also participated in a Summit session, sharing their learnings and perspectives on strategies to integrate early-career researchers’ contributions to sustainable solutions for island communities.

The Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4) officially ended last Thursday. It has been rewarding for us to not only collect and share information about the conference to keep island professionals updated on the most relevant news, but to also meet and amplify the message of many impactful voices at SIDS4.
The Island Innovation team co-organised 6 SIDS4 side events in Antigua, with partners such as the World Food Programme (WFP), the Cabinet of the Special Envoy for Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius (BES-islands), UN Climate Change RCC Caribbean, Climate Analytics, Ecovybz, Kneyzus Energy, O Camões – Instituto da Cooperação e da Língua, I. P. and many more.
We also express our deepest gratitude to the expert speakers who shared their insights during our side events. The conference may be over, but the work continues! We will keep covering the ongoing efforts of organisations making a positive difference for island communities worldwide.
