A Solomon Island organisation knows as ‘Kastom Keepers’ is helping to preserve traditional knowledge and cultural practices in the country.

Rebuilding traditional knowledge sharing spaces or houses known as a ‘fae fae’ has been one of the projects according to the founder of Kastom Keepers, Millicent Barty.

“Fae fae’s were the custom houses or custom schools that our ancestors designed purposefully for traditional knowledge exchange,” Ms Barty said.

The organisation has been working with the community to make sure the spaces are suitable for elders and knowledge holders can pass on this information.

“[It’s important] that we empower them and equip them with the capacity that they need in order to start running these intergenerational knowledge exchanges, especially with the young people in the community,” Ms Barty said.
