History was made on the First Day of COP28!
During the Opening Plenary, countries have pledged more than $420 million to seed the historic Loss and Damage Fund to help vulnerable nations deal with climate change. It has been an early success for negotiators in Dubai, however, questions remain over the long-term sustainability of funding sources and how the fund will be administered.
Island Innovation @ Island of Hope
The Island of Hope’s Island Stage successfully opened on Monday! In partnership with Climate Action, the team has been bringing together global actors from SIDS and climate-vulnerable regions to share inspiring narratives, adaptable solutions, strategies for capacity building, and instances of best practices. The Caribbean Climate Justice Leaders Academy
This year Island Innovation’s delegation to COP28 numbers 17! In addition to 7 of our team on-site, we are supporting 10 participants from the Caribbean Climate Justice Leaders Academy, funded by the Open Society Foundations, that constitute the COP28 Delegation in, ready to represent their countries on the global stage and make the case for island nations.
At the CARICOM Pavillion, the Caribbean Youth Delegation shed light on the diverse impacts of the climate crisis on their homelands, emphasising the vital importance of international and intergenerational collaboration.
Additionally, Youth Delegates, Riddhi Samtani (Sint Maarten) and Muskaan Khemani (Curaçao), had an exclusive opportunity to engage in a dinner dialogue with esteemed government figures from the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Notable attendees included Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas of Curaçao, alongside the distinguished presence of the Dutch Climate Envoy Royal Highness Prince Jaime of Bourbon-Parma and Prime Minister Mark Rutte of the Netherlands.
The delegates engaged in discussions concerning the inclusion and representation of Dutch Caribbean islands within the broader political landscape of the Kingdom.
