Māori and Niuean artist Cora-Allan ‘reawakens’ a sleeping traditional artform
The traditional Niuean bark cloth practice of hiapo has been lying dormant for several generations after slowly disappearing in the early 1900s — now, one artist in Aotearoa New Zealand has reawakened the practice. Cora-Allan, a visual artist of Māori and Niuean descent, has spent years researching and reviving the practice of hiapo and is regarded as one of the only living traditional makers in Aotearoa New Zealand and Niue.
The Bahamas and the Solomon Islands formalise diplomatic relations
The Bahamas and Solomon Islands have signed a Joint Communique to formalise diplomatic relations. The agreement was signed by Bahamian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Stan Smith and his Solomon Islands colleague Ambassador Jane Waetara last week in New York.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism Viliame Gavoka says the launch of the Counting Coral Sculptural Coral Gene Bank at Vomo Island is another important step towards sustainable tourism and highlights the importance of preserving our marine ecosystems.

After the Global Sustainable Islands Summit next month, the Island Innovation team will be flying to Antigua and Barbuda to attend the UN’s 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4).
Over four days, leaders from SIDS and beyond, will gather in a spirit of solidarity and solutions with the private sector, civil society, and young people to advance new ideas, raise new pledges of support, and spur delivery on agreed commitments and seek to deliver specific initiatives and concrete deliverables to address SIDS-specific challenges including the climate crisis, biodiversity and spiralling debt.
