The Impact of the Caribbean Climate Justice Leaders Academy
The Caribbean Climate Justice Leaders Academy is a unique opportunity created in 2023 by Island Innovation, and funded by the Open Society Foundations, for young Caribbean environmental advocate and community leaders to learn about Climate Justice, engage with global policymakers, and promote climate action.
Following last year’s call for applications, we received over 500 applications from across the Caribbean, from which a 35-strong group (each participant from every CARICOM nation) was selected to take part in the programme.
Additionally, 10 out of the 35 Climate Justice Leaders were selected to attend COP28 in Dubai, a few months ago, where they served as envoys for their island communities.
The impact and reach of the Academy’s inaugural cohort was larger than our team had hoped. This group of 35 young people showcased the importance of having youth from underrepresented regions involved in critical discussions on climate and society, and being able to have these conversations at a regional or global level.
Each of the 35 individuals are continuing their amazing work and making a positive change in their communities.
Recently, one of our COP28 delegate, Dejea Lyons, was honoured with the Legacy Award for her years of work.
The Legacy Award rewards 20 outstanding young people for The Diana Award’s 25th Anniversary year.
