Circular Economy for a More Sustainable Future
From waste management to recycling, hydrogen for power, seaweed for biofuel, and economic competitiveness, the concept of the Circular Economy encompasses many things. But what is actually meant by the words?
According to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, circular economy refers to a new and inclusive economic paradigm, that aims to minimize pollution and waste, extend product lifecycles and enable broad sharing of physical and natural assets. For islands around the world, these objectives are particularly important, especially in light of the economic challenges intrinsic to COVID-19 recovery.
This week we will feature stories that illustrate the ways a circular economic model can move away from the traditional linear pattern, and create long-term environmental and social benefits that will shape a foundation of resilience in developing island economies.
