Greenpeace joins Pasifika leaders and activists for Kioa climate dialogue
Greenpeace Australia Pacific has joined civil society groups, Pasifika activists and climate leaders on Kioa island, Fiji, for a ‘talanoa’ or discussion as part of the next stage of the Kioa Climate Emergency Declaration.
Over two days, delegates discussed pressing climate issues facing Pacific communities, and progressing the design of a regional finance mechanism, the Kato Pacific Community Climate Fund.
Maui’s fire became deadly fast. Climate change, flash drought, invasive grass and more fuelled it
Hawaii went from lush to bone dry and thus more fire-prone in a matter of just a few weeks — a key factor in a dangerous mix of conditions appear to have combined to make the wildfires blazing a path of destruction in Maui particularly damaging. Experts say climate change is increasing the likelihood of these flash droughts as well as other extreme weather events like what’s happening on the island of Maui, where hundreds of people have lost their lives and a historic tourist town was devastated.
The Virtual Island Summit 2023
Getting people living in SIDS in one place is not an easy task, given the heterogeneity of our whereabouts and that is why providing a free, virtual, free-carbon is crucial for islanders to share their thoughts, innovative projects and partnership opportunities.
As Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley says: “As islanders, we know that to live is to share, to be creative and to be resourceful. (…) And that is why I’m certain we can and will apply these same qualities, that we, as islanders share, and during the Virtual Island Summit find solutions to the common problems we all face”.
We want to thank the beloved Prime Minister of Barbados for her testimonial about the event. We noticed that you have not yet registered, we hope this gives you a good insight into what we have planned for this year’s edition of the Virtual Island Summit.
As every year, our flagship event, the Virtual Island Summit will gather speakers & attendees (policymakers, academics, NGO representatives, entrepreneurs, etc), from around the world, to share their expertise on topics pertinent to island communities.
COP28 is a critical moment in global transformative climate action. We will create an “E-Pavilion” where we will share key insights and developments related to remote, rural and island communities. We want to ensure that your communities are represented and that relevant information is made available to you.
