The Island Innovation Ambassador Program forms an active network of engaged leaders with the purpose of positively impacting people, communities and environments around them. Today we are highlighting Mr. Ancel Bhagwandeen from Trinidad and Tobago.
Ancel specialises in the development of climate sensitive sustainable technologies for the developing world, especially SIDS. He works with local and regional NGOs, most recently concerning one of his most widely-known inventions, the SolarPonix Tower Garden. This device uses solar energy as a way to power a hydroponic garden, which has the potential to simultaneously boost food security while decreasing reliance on fossil fuels. The SolarPonix unit is climate adaptable and also includes an integrated electronic (free of toxins) pest deterrent for the Giant African Snail, slugs and large ants/bugs. Such a deterrent is completely free of toxins, pet-friendly and child safe. The project secured first place in the Caribbean Sustainable Energy Technology Competition held in January 2023 in Port of Spain.
