On Saturday, 10 December, the world will celebrate Human Rights Day. It is also an opportunity to focus on Women’s rights and gender equality.
Women represent half of the world’s potential but, as a group, they have been marginalized. Their potential contributions to economic growth, social progress and environmental protection have also often been discredited. Gender inequality exists all over the world, however, its impacts are especially notable in island communities.
Gender equality has been shown to stimulate economic growth, a factor that is vital for countries with fewer economic opportunities, including Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Island communities now more than ever need to be proactive in bridging gender inequality in their communities and utilize the framework provided by the SDGs. Fortunately, many island countries such as Sri Lanka, the Solomon Islands and the Faroe Islands are gradually driving change.
Do you want to be part of a global network of island changemakers? Do you want to gain critical skills to drive positive changes in your community? Apply to become an Island Innovation ambassador (all ages can apply!). Read more about the program here.
