Indigenous Peoples possess unique knowledge that form part of our global heritage. This knowledge has been historically marginalised in the management of information. However, the growing recognition that Indigenous knowledge has a role to play in both national development and environmental conservation has led to the growth of interest in highlighting, including and managing it.
Recently, the University of Hawai’i announced the establishment of an indigenous data science hub with a “living laboratory” to advance ecological preservation efforts by community members. Kamuela Enos, the Director of the UH Office of Indigenous Innovation stated that the hub will bring together community leaders, indigenous practitioners, academic experts, students and government officials to develop sustainability solutions rooted in ancestral knowledge and indigenous practices.
