The island nations of the Pacific are unquestionably at the forefront of climate change, and have raised the alarm to the UN’s shipping body in relation to the possible connection between shipping and climate change.
The Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands, and Kiribati have asked the world’s governments to come to an agreement aimed at making international shipping emissions-free by 2050. All three territories cited the findings of The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). These findings show that the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global heating to 1.5C is absolutely necessary to avert the disastrous possibility faced by some islands in the Pacific of being destroyed by rising sea levels.
