A vast number of coastal and island communities in Canada depend on the use of diesel as their power source, a common pattern also seen on SIDS all over the world. In an attempt at minimizing the use of fossil fuels and cutting energy costs, there are new projects on the rise. Tidal energy, based on the movement of tides, is clean, predictable and renewable. The best thing is, it can be used instead of diesel and as a complementary energy source to more established renewables, such as wind and solar when trying to operate microgrids. Innovative projects like these are crucial as we make our way to more adapted and resilient ecosystems.
