Fresh water resources on many islands are challenged by sea level rise, extreme weather events, population growth, pollution and other factors. Furthermore, climate change has intensified droughts and affecting the water cycle. This scarcity of drinking water is a critical issue for many island communities, as it can impact everything from agriculture and food security to public health, tourism and economic development.
In order to discuss the water challenges facing islands, and explore innovative solutions to these challenges, we are hosting a webinar + networking session on Water Resources for Islands, on March 15th, ahead of the UN 2023 Water Conference.
The webinar will feature expert speakers from around the world, who will share their experiences working on water issues in island contexts and discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with sustainable water management.
Participants will therefore learn about successful island water projects and initiatives from a range of island regions, including integrated water resource management, and nature-based solutions.
Networking Session
In addition to the webinar, participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussion with the expert panel and fellow participants to exchange ideas and best practices.
Join us for this informative and engaging webinar to learn how island communities are addressing the challenges of water resource management in the face of climate change!
For International Women’s Day we celebrated the inspiring achievements of women around the world, including those who have been driving sustainable change on islands.
On the island of Calibang, northern Palawan in the Philippines, Tagbanua women are doing important conservation work. Indigenous Women from this area have figured prominently in safeguarding Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), including marine species that either nest in, or migrate to, the isles. They help clean the coast, watch and restore the mangrove areas, take care of the nurseries, and more.
Women play a critical role in promoting environmental protection, community resilience, and economic growth on islands. A reminder that any day of the year is a good time to recognise the importance of gender equality in our societies.
