Young people play important leadership roles in ocean conservation and the protection of marine areas. From the IUCN Congress in Marseilles to the more recent United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in Montreal, young professionals are mobilising and taking action to protect the world’s oceans.
At the beginning of the month, Young people made up approximately one-third of all participants at the Fifth International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC5). Their perspectives are helping shape the thematic discussions that took place at the Congress. IMPAC5 aimed to provide an opportunity for the global community of marine conservation managers, practitioners, and decision-makers to exchange knowledge, experience, and best practices to strengthen marine biodiversity conservation and protect the ocean’s natural and cultural heritage.
Six individuals from the Pacific (Papua New Guinea, Federated States of Micronesia, Samoa, Cook Islands and Fiji) participated in IMPAC5 through financial support from the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management (BIOPAMA) Programme, the IMPAC1 Organising Committee, IUCN Oceania and Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).
The World Ocean Summit celebrates its tenth anniversary this month from February 27th to March 1st in Lisbon. As the Summit returns to an in-person event, the three-day programme welcomes more than 180 speakers and 1,500 attendees who will examine the greatest challenges facing the ocean: climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. Speakers and delegates from conservation, finance, shipping, fishing and aquaculture, tourism and renewable energy will provide a diversity of perspectives and expertise to enrich worldwide organisations.
The Island Innovation team, represented by James Ellsmoor, CEO of Island Innovation, will also be on the ground at the World Ocean Summit. If you’re a stakeholder in the sector and you’re interested in joining the Summit & Expo, you can register here with this 20% discount code: IslandInnovation20.
