Mystery ship capsizes in Trinidad and Tobago, triggering massive oil spill and national emergency
Emergency workers in Trinidad and Tobago are racing to clean up a massive oil spill after a mystery vessel ran aground near the Caribbean islands, casting a pall over Carnival tourism. The spill was “not under control” as of Sunday, said Prime Minister Keith Rowley, who added that the country is grappling with a national emergency.

France unveils plan to curtail right to French citizenship in Indian Ocean island of Mayotte
French authorities have announced a controversial plan to amend the constitution to revoke birthplace citizenship on the French Indian Ocean island of Mayotte, claiming it would help stem an immigration crisis.

Different countries across the Pacific have their own shark-related rituals. In the New Ireland province of Papua New Guinea, it’s shark calling. The locals believe the shark holds the spirits of their ancestors — the men of the village sing to the sharks to catch them to provide food for the village.
We are partnering with Our Shared Ocean to offer a virtual training course in Sustainable Development for post-graduate students from the Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
The 6-week course, “Best-Practice Skills for Sustainable Development in the SIDS” will equip participants with relevant and practical skills that can be applied to their current studies.
There will be a further opportunity to attend and present at the Global Sustainable Islands Summit, co-hosted with the Government of Prince Edward Island (Canada). Students enrolled in a relevant Post-graduate (MSc / PhD) course in an eligible SIDS institution and citizens of the UN’s list of 39 Small Island Developing States or the 18 Regional Commissions are eligible to apply.
Process: Submit your application by March 8th. The top participants will be eligible to apply for the Our Shared Ocean Mobility & Travel Grants (up to €2000) to facilitate their attendance at the Global Sustainable Islands Summit and showcase their work.
