The Rabuka government in Fiji, having taken power from FijiFirst in 2022, faces internal tensions but is set to exceed the longest term of any Fijian government that came into office following a peaceful transfer of power.

Notable developments under Rabuka’s rule include the repeal of the controversial Media Industry Development Act, the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the reinstatement of the Great Council of Chiefs.

In foreign affairs, Rabuka has taken a pro-Israel stance and has shifted away from China towards longstanding Western partners.

But his governing coalition remains fragile and is frequently caught off guard by Rabuka’s unpredictable policy announcements.

The key challenge for the Rabuka government has been to hold together an effective coalition. The coalition has held despite tensions, and on 1 January 2024, the Rabuka government exceeded the longest term of any Fijian government that came into office through a peaceful transfer of power.
