What are Gran Canaria’s biggest challenges in terms of sustainability?
Climate change is the canvas on which the history of the 21st century is drawn. The challenges cover multiple fronts: the pressure of tourism on natural spaces, the fight against invasive species and the management of increasingly severe drought. But this is just the tip of the iceberg.

If we do not transform our relationship with the environment, there will be no turning back. The energy transition, the circular economy, sustainable mobility and water management are essential pillars to ensure a viable future. But Gran Canaria is determined to become a laboratory for solutions to these global problems.

How does the island face these challenges?
The key is innovation. Gran Canaria has the potential to be a unique test bed. What works here can be replicated throughout the world. Pioneering projects such as Salto de Chira and the push for renewable energies are important measures, but the solution also involves the involvement of the whole of society.
