Noelle Young — who is attending the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Baku, Azerbaijan — was recently featured in a live interview on France 24, where she discussed critical climate action topics.
Ms Young said, “I am proud to currently be the sole Bermudian representative during the first week of this global event, where critical discussions about climate action and financing are taking place.
“One key topic being considered is the use of a term for islands like Bermuda: Subnational Island Jurisdictions (SNIJs). This designation recognizes islands that operate as administrative subdivisions within larger sovereign states, such as Bermuda which is owned by the UK. SNIJs, like Small Island Developing States (SIDS), are highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change due to their low-lying coastal topography, reliance on marine resources, and susceptibility to external environmental and economic shocks.
