About Mikayla Johnson
I joined Island Innovation in April 2024 as a Business Development Associate. I currently work towards lead generation and client outreach. I first heard about Island Innovation during the Virtual Island Summit in 2022 and was instantly intrigued by the topics of discussion concerning island communities. I instantly connected with Island Innovation’s mission to support islands worldwide as I was born and raised on an island, Trinidad and Tobago to be exact.
My interests include environmental sustainability, as well as climate change mitigation and adaptation. I have a BA in Communication Studies and Geography, a combination that has given me an all-rounded perspective of what we do here at Island Innovation. I have interned at Journal of CESaRE and volunteered at organizations like Rotaract where I served as the Disaster Risk Management and Sustainability Officer and then President. My volunteerism has been guided by my passion for helping those in need as well as fueling sustainability projects in the Caribbean space. Working at Island Innovation has been a great opportunity to connect with like-minded people globally, from all walks of life.
Living on an island has its perks so in my free time I love unwinding outdoors and exploring new places to keep me grounded.
Surprising fact: I love being creative and using my hands. I’m always trying new hobbies like making wire jewelry and crocheting!

Giving visibility to projects worldwide
Our flagship event, the Virtual Island Summit, is one of the biggest events for sustainable development. Every year, it brings together over 10,000 stakeholders from around the world for a week-long virtual event covering every timezone.
